Why Is the Sky Blue?

Short answer: sunlight contains many colors, and Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of visible light especially strongly. Blue light reaches our eyes from all across the sky, so the daytime sky usually looks blue.

Sunlight is a rainbow in disguise

White sunlight contains the colors you see in a rainbow. Each color has a different wavelength. When sunlight travels through Earth’s atmosphere, it interacts with tiny gas molecules.

Why blue wins during the day

Shorter visible wavelengths are scattered more strongly by the atmosphere than longer ones. Violet is even shorter than blue, but our eyes are less sensitive to violet and the sunlight reaching us contains less violet than blue. The result is the familiar blue sky.

If Earth had no atmosphere to scatter sunlight, the sky would look dark even while the Sun was shining—similar to the view from the Moon.

Why are sunsets orange and red?

Near sunset, sunlight travels through more atmosphere before reaching your eyes. More of the shorter blue light is scattered out of the direct path. Reds and oranges become easier to see, creating colorful sunsets.
